Getting Ready for The Big Game Day

Excitement builds as The Big Game Day approaches. Parties are planned, food is prepared and speculating begins about who will emerge as this year’s winner. Held February 7 in Miami, two of the best professional football teams duke it out for the biggest championship in the sport. Whether you’re a die-hard gridiron fan or just enjoy watching the commercials, you can impress and enlighten friends with these fun football facts:

The football…
- It takes a lot of cows – about 3,000 of them – to supply the professional football teams with enough leather for a year’s worth of footballs.
- Although only about 10 footballs are used, the home team is required to provide 24 footballs for each professional game.
- The first football was round. It was changed in 1934 to help quarterbacks get a better grip.
- Early footballs were made from the skin of a pig, hence the nickname “pigskin.”
- In China, football is sometimes referred to as “olive ball” because of the football’s resemblance to an olive.

The players…
- The player’s numbers represent their positions.
* 1-19 for quarterbacks and kickers.
* 20-49 for running backs and defensive backs.
* 50-59 for centers and linebackers (centers may also be assigned numbers up to 79).
* 60-79 for linemen.
* 80-89 for receivers and tight ends.
* Defensive lineman and linebackers can be assigned numbers up to 90-99.
* Defensive players can have any number.
- Only two players – kickers and punters – are allowed to use their feet to move the ball.
- The football player’s knee has the greatest risk of injury.

The food…
- Except for Thanksgiving, more food is consumed during The Big Game than any other day.
- The highest consumption of pizza occurs during the weekend of The Big Game.
- Other popular snacks include: chili, meatballs, salsa, ribs, chips, and wings.
